The next Swedish citizenship test: what's confirmed and what isn't

The question has come in every day since 15 August: when can you sit the Swedish citizenship test again? The short answer is that nobody outside UHR knows, and that UHR has published exactly one sentence on the subject. The longer answer is worth reading, because far more is settled around the missing date than most people assume.

The only thing UHR has said about the next sitting

On UHR’s questions-and-answers page, one sentence carries all the weight:

“Information om när nästa provtillfälle är kommer att meddelas på uhr.se under hösten.”

(Information about when the next test date is will be announced on uhr.se during the autumn.)

That is the whole of it. No month, no city, no registration window. On the page about the test the same pattern repeats across three separate sentences: “Information om nästa provtillfälle i samhällskunskap kommer”, “Information om provtid och antal frågor för nästa provtillfälle kommer” and “Information om anmälningsavgift kommer” — the next civics sitting, the test duration and question count, and the registration fee, all still to come.

Four open questions, four promises of information. We check these pages daily, and they have been unchanged since mid-August.

What is actually confirmed

A missing date does not mean everything is unknown. The following is settled and can be planned around:

The test will be held regularly. The citizenship test is not a one-off event but a permanent part of the citizenship process under the law that took effect on 6 June 2026. The question is when, not whether.

The next test will cost 2,000 SEK if it is held in 2027. The fee is set in section 6 of Förordning (2026:451) om medborgarskapsprov, and the transitional provisions apply it for the first time to tests held in 2027. The August sitting was free. The subject matter is fixed. The eleven knowledge areas the test may cover are listed in section 2 of the same regulation, and UHR’s study material Sverige i fokus is unchanged since the corrected version of 10 August 2026. What you revise now does not go stale when a date eventually appears.

You need a letter of instruction. It is Migrationsverket, not UHR, that decides whether you must sit the test, and registration requires an anvisningsbrev from them. Without that letter there is nothing to register for, whatever date is announced.

What cannot be known yet

Be sceptical of any site presenting the following as settled, because none of it is:

• Date and location. Nothing is published, and UHR has now confirmed there is not even a plan. Andreas Sandberg, head of unit at UHR, to Universitetsläraren on 21 September 2026: “Någon färdig plan för var och i vilka lokaler framtida medborgarskapsprov kommer att hållas finns inte” — there is no settled plan for where future tests will be held. He mentions involving more universities as one option, but notes their premises are hard to get mid-semester, and adds that Stockholmsmässan worked well logistically and that commercial venues may well be used again. Commercial exhibition halls look likelier than university halls, but nothing is decided.
• The test format. The August test was roughly 60 multiple-choice questions with four options each, in Swedish, on paper, in 90 minutes. UHR explicitly says duration and question count for the next sitting are still to be announced — an odd way to phrase it if the format were unchanged.
• The registration window. For August, registration opened on 8 June and closed on 2 July, with a limited number of places. No comparable window has been announced for the next test.
• The pass mark. Still unpublished. Figures like 70 or 80 per cent circulate on third-party sites without a source.

Part of the explanation for the silence is that the August sitting was an utprövningsprov, a trial sitting. The questions were used in earnest for the first time, and the results of that trial will reasonably shape how the next test is assembled. It is hard to announce a duration and a question count before that analysis is finished.

The date to watch: 30 September

There is one concrete marker here that rarely gets mentioned. A government decision of 5 February 2026 (U2026/00202) amended UHR’s assignment on the citizenship test. It contains two dates worth knowing:

• By 30 September 2026, UHR must report on the assignment to the Ministry of Education, copied to the Ministry of Justice.
• By 1 October 2027, the Swedish language test, covering reading and listening comprehension, must be fully developed.

The 30 September report is not the same thing as an announcement of the next test date, and the government decision promises no such announcement. But an agency due to report to the ministry at the end of September, having already promised information “during the autumn”, plausibly has more to say in early October than in mid-September. If you are waiting for a date, that is where to look first.

First come the August results

The results of the first sitting will most likely land before the next date is announced. UHR writes:

“Resultatet publiceras i oktober. Information om vilket datum resultatet publiceras kommer.”

(The result will be published in October. Information about the exact date is coming.)

If you sat the test on 15 August, the result appears in your account at medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se and is reported onward to Migrationsverket. You do not need to submit it yourself.

What to do in the meantime

Do not wait for the date to start revising. It is the one part of this process you control. When the date does arrive, the registration window will likely be short, as it was in June, and that is too late to start from zero.

Check whether you need the test at all. The knowledge requirement can be met with grades from SFI or komvux, among others. See Can grades replace the Swedish citizenship test?.

Watch Migrationsverket, not only UHR. The letter of instruction comes from them, and it is your case with Migrationsverket that determines whether and when the test becomes relevant for you.

Do not trust a date without a source. If a supposed test date appears somewhere, check it against uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet before planning around it. Ahead of the August sitting, both invented exam questions and incorrect information circulated widely, and demand is no lower now.
