Registration for Sweden's citizenship test opens June 8 — and audio study material is now live
Today, June 6, Sweden’s new citizenship law takes effect. Two concrete updates for anyone preparing for the test: the registration date is now confirmed, and the official study material is now available in audio format.
Registration opens Sunday, June 8
The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) has confirmed that registration for the first citizenship knowledge test opens Sunday, June 8, 2026. Until recently, the website only said “opens in early June” — now there’s a firm date.
The test itself is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026 in Stockholm. It’s free of charge and spots are limited — registration closes once they fill up.
One key thing to know: you cannot register directly through UHR’s website without first receiving an anvisningsbrev (referral letter) from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). Migrationsverket decides who is required to take the test, and registration is only possible once you have that letter.
The test is in Swedish, on paper, and runs 90 minutes. It consists of around 60 multiple-choice questions with four answer options. The subject is basic knowledge about Swedish society — not Swedish language skills, which will be a separate component introduced later.
Audio study material is now live
The second update: “Sverige i fokus — Utbildningsmaterial till medborgarskapsprov” (Sweden in Focus — Study Material for the Citizenship Test) is now available to listen to. UHR has published 14 MP3 chapters on its website — the same content as the previously released PDF, now in a format you can use on the go.
The 14 chapters cover the Swedish democratic system, how Sweden is governed, elections and political parties, law and justice, the role of the media, human rights, the labour market, the welfare state, modern Swedish history, Sweden and the world, religion, and traditions. All chapters are available at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/utbildningsmaterial.
What’s still missing
Two things haven’t been published yet: sample questions and details about possible test accommodations (such as extra time). UHR has said sample questions will be published “well in advance” of the test — no date confirmed yet.
Key dates:
- June 8: Registration opens (requires referral letter from Migrationsverket)
- August 15: Test in Stockholm (free, limited spots)
- Now: Study material available as PDF and audio at uhr.se
